Debates on the Swiss Made Label

Apr 14, 2007

The Swiss watch industry federation proposed a reform project regarding the Swiss Made label. This is because several watch companies are not very satisfied with the quality of some watches with a Swiss Made label on them. The proposal raised debates since several companies think that the label will serve well only to high range timepieces.

The chairman of the Swiss watch industry federation, Jean-Daniel Pasche, outlined that two main criteria are currently taken into consideration: the manufacturing area and the number of components. He said that the reform project will improve the method of watch evaluation.

According to Mr. Pasche it is important for the Swiss Made label to take advantage of its good image in the world, otherwise it might be at risk of losing its prestige.

During the next general assembly of the Swiss watch industry federation, companies will make the decision on the reform project. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, the president of Chopard, stated that it is important to have a brainstorming before the voting begins.

He outlined that today the Swiss Made label isn't satisfactory in terms of expectancies. Mr. Scheufele mentioned that Chopard would stand by what and how it manufactures, with or without the label.

The position of another major watch brand, Patek Philippe, is different. The company's officials stated that Patek Philippe would rather defend Geneva's Hallmark. Debates will continue the decision is made.
