Omega Speedmasters Go Under Hammer for Almost Twice Their Estimates

Four Omega Speedmaster Professionals watches created in limited edition were sold for almost twice their pre-estimated price at an unprecedented charity auction held in Berlin last week. Each watch represented the last piece in its line and paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Omega legendary Speedmaster chronograph. All proceeds received from the Speedmaster 50th Anniversary auction will be donated to children's charity funds.
The charity event was organized by Antiquorum. The auction was held at the prominent KaDeWe department store and marked the third time the Omega Company staged an exhibition of its most highly evaluated timepieces.
At the opening of the exhibition, the four Omega Speedmaster watches went under the hammer of Osvaldo Patrizzi, Antiquorum president. The following lots were presented at the auction:
- a white gold Speedmaster model, sold for Euro 45,000 (U$63,000)
- a pink gold Speedmaster model, sold for Euro 35,000 (U$48,000)
- a yellow gold Speedmaster model, sold for Euro 35,000 (U$48,000) (each of the three above mentioned timepieces is No 57 in a series of 57 pieces)
The first Omega Speedmaster on the list - White Gold 50th Anniversary Speedmaster No. 57/57(Ref. 311.63.42.50.01.003) - was pre-estimated at 25-27,000 Euro and sold for the amazing 45,000 Euro. The timepiece was produced in 2007. This exceptionally rare Omega Speedmaster features asymmetric lines. It represents a water-resistant men's wristwatch.
The timepiece's black enamel dial features round chronograph registers. The black bezel of the Omega watch features the tachometer scale graduated to 500 UPH. the movement of the timepiece comprises the co-axial escapement technology. The Omega Speedmaster was sold in the originally designed fitted box and provided with a certificate, spare bracelet and special tools.
The buyers from all over the world, interested in acquiring the Omega anniversary creations, came to KaDeWe, were bidding by telephone or via the internet. According to Mr Stephen Urquhart, Omega president, the Berlin public appreciated the auction as a really fantastic show. The perfect results of the auction proved once again that Omega watches are
found among most desirable items among avid watch collectors.
The success of the auction followed the Omegamania auction held earlier this year that enjoyed tremendous success. Three hundred vintage or prominent Omega watches were sold for over CHF6.5m at the event also organized by Antiquorum.
Mr Urquhart, Mr Patrizzi and Mr Patrice Wagner, KaDeWe director, invited several celebrities from the world of German show-business, with the actors Uwe Ochsenknecht, Heiner Lauterbach, and Jan Josef Liefers among others.
